🏛️ A Historic Setting: Norfolk Barracks
Constructed between 1878 and 1880, Norfolk Barracks, also known as the Volunteer Artillery Drill Hall, was originally built for the 4th West York Artillery Volunteers. The foundation stone was laid by Flora Fitzalan-Howard, the 15th Duchess of Norfolk, on September 25, 1878. Designed by the esteemed architectural firm M. E. Hadfield and Son, the building was completed at a cost of £13,000, with significant contributions from the Duke of Norfolk. pals.org.uk
The structure boasts a vast hall measuring 180 feet in length and 90 feet in width, capable of accommodating up to 12,000 individuals standing or seating 2,500. Adjoining facilities included a gun-shed, harness rooms, stables, and a riding school measuring 75 by 60 feet. The roof was ingeniously constructed in a single span without internal pillars, showcasing the architectural innovation of the era.
Throughout its history, Norfolk Barracks has served various roles—from a military drill hall and headquarters for the Royal Field Artillery to a venue for public events, including concerts, exhibitions, and sporting events. Notably, it hosted the Sheffield City Battalion's first parade on September 14, 1914.
